‘Running’ the Country

by Eric on November 6, 2009

I remember back during election season people talked about which guy can run the country? The president runs the country. Is he good enough to run the country?

Why run?

Running something means making it work. A driver runs the car by steering it and coordinating it.  The president has no where near the power over the country a driver has over his automobile.

The people run the country—always have, always will. We elect the politicians to those positions, we buy no-money-down 100% mortgages, we make impulse purchases, we overeat, we build businesses, nonprofits, parks, communities, and everything else good and bad.

What does the president do then? He represents the country, sets the vision, and from the vision pushes policies like healthcare and diplomacy with the Muslim world.

When we heard talk about who can run the country, it makes it seem like we’re sorting through resumes for a machinist or low level worker and tallying experience points. Because of that one word, people assumed something about what the president does without knowing it.

I thought Obama’s life story represented what America was about more than John McCain. I also saw in him a vision I wanted to help realize. Simple as that.
